I have just purchased 2 isee diamonds at Tomei in KL.I was thinking of seting the stones onto platinum rings but was strongly adviced to go with white gold.

1st is .94carat and the 2nd stone is 1.33carat

Can someone pls advice the advantages of white gold or should I still go with Platinum

thanks

Dear Richard

First of all, please allow us to congratulate you on your isee2 purchases and to welcome you to the isee2 community!

With regards to your question as to deciding between white gold and platinum, please allow me to list their respective characteristics in order to help you make a decision:

• The Platinum sold in Malaysia is usually of 95% purity, ie 950 pt. The White Gold sold in Malaysia for fine jewellery is usually 750% gold, ie 750 wg.

• As 750 white gold is still a little yellowish from the gold content, it is usually electroplated over with rhodium, a platinum-group metal. Platinum, on the other hand, is usually not plated over.

• Both metals are greyish-white in colour.

• After several years of constant use, due to the wearing out of the electroplating, the yellowish base of the white gold may be exposed. However, this is easily rectified by your jeweller with another layer of electroplating. Platinum also patinas [ie tarnishes] over time – again, this is also easily rectified by your jeweller.

• Platinum has a specific gravity [SG] which is approximately 50% higher than that of white gold. As such, a jewellery item made in platinum, eg a ring, will be heavier than the same one in white gold.

• Coupled with the fact that platinum prices are higher than gold, a piece of jewellery in platinum will usually cost quite a bit more than that in white gold.

Both metals complement and allow the beauty of your isee2 Diamonds to come to life on your wife’s fingers. In short, your choice of metals is really one of personal preference – appeal over affordability, weight over lightness [especially for rings].

With kindest regards

Irene Yong
